You Were Here Before is a short Unity game-poem about restoring family photographs that refuse to stay purely archival. Keyboard-and-mouse interactions turn retouching into a quiet interrogation of memory, nostalgia, and what an image leaves out.
What is You Were Here Before?
Its invitation is disarmingly plain: fix the family photographs and remember how they were. That practical little task becomes a frame for doubt, because the pictures are not presented as neutral evidence. The project began as an attempt to adapt Richard McGuire's graphic novel Here, then wandered into its own compact meditation on memory. The result is closer to an illustrated poem with interaction than a conventional visual novel campaign. Credits spread the design, writing, code, art, production, and music across a small team, but the finished experience is intentionally brief enough to hold in one sitting.
What you can do there
- Repair family photographs
- Follow a brief memory-and-nostalgia narrative
Why we picked it
A photograph already asks you to trust a cropped version of the past; turning restoration into the central action makes that tension tactile. The short run, multilingual presentation, and uneasy family framing give the piece a precise emotional shape without asking for an evening.
How to get the most from it
Launch it with a keyboard and mouse and give it a few uninterrupted minutes. Treat the photographs as part of the narration rather than as a puzzle inventory, and watch for the gap between repairing an image and recovering a memory.
