Worst Chess is a browser collection of deliberately mangled chess jokes: tiny variants that turn a familiar board into text fields, a tilting puzzle, or some other extremely bad idea. The page still labels it a very early prototype, but lists mouse and touch controls plus local play for one or two people. Browser play is free; version 0.3 downloads cost $5 or more.

What is Worst Chess (Esther Sauce)?

The joke is not that Ludonaut plays chess badly; it is that the game keeps finding new ways to be bad at being chess. One documented variant converts every square into a text box, letting you copy a knight, paste a bishop, or type something that is not a piece at all. Another tilts the board hard enough that a fellow jam participant could not work out how to move. The project's sprawling subtitle, shrinking promised variant count, and buttons labeled like regrettable decisions make the surrounding page part of the comedy too.

What you can do there

  • Try deliberately broken chess minigames
  • Play locally with one or two players

Why we picked it

Most chess remixes add a mechanic and keep the board respectable. Worst Chess treats the board as raw comic material, from editable Unicode pieces to controls that may be funnier than they are legible. That scruffy, self-aware approach gives the prototype a distinct point of view even when a particular gag lands sideways.

How to get the most from it

Choose Run Extremely Bad Idea and approach each variant as a fresh joke, not a normal match. Try the mouse first, then touch if the controls feel slippery; the page advertises both. Click pieces, test the board itself, and expect the rules to change between bits. A second nearby player may help with the local two-player variants.

Good to know

This remains marked in development, and its last documented build is version 0.3 from June 2018. The free browser version sits beside $5-or-more desktop and Android downloads; the developer called the unsigned Android debug build substantially broken. One documented gag requests browser geolocation permission, so declining location access is a reasonable privacy choice. The page can frame only inside itch.io, not Site Stumble's player.

Who made it, and when?
