Tiny Games

Prototime

Five seconds to run, five seconds to shoot, and no time to sulk.

Prototime is a compact top-down shooter with a metronome for a rulebook. Every five seconds it flips between movement and attack: keep moving during Run, then plant yourself and aim during Shoot. The forced rhythm turns basic survival into a brisk exercise in anticipation.

What is Prototime?

The clock is the real boss here. Prototime alternates between two five-second states, asking you to move while weapons are quiet and shoot when movement gives way to aiming. Standing still during Run costs health, so each cycle becomes a tiny plan: reposition, find a line, fire, repeat. Pills occasionally restore health, and two documented enemy types keep the brief jam build from being a pure target range. The result is less a conventional shooter than a stop-and-go choreography where bad timing matters as much as bad aim.

What you can do there

  • Keep moving during five-second Run phases
  • Aim and fire during alternating Shoot phases
  • Collect pills to restore health

Why we picked it

One clean reversal makes familiar controls feel newly awkward in a useful way. The idea also landed with its original jam audience: Prototime placed first for gameplay and mechanics in Minimalistic Jam 3's published results from 12 ratings.

How to get the most from it

Use W and S to reposition during each Run phase, then aim with the mouse when the state switches to Shoot. Watch health closely, route toward pills when they appear, and spend the movement window setting up the next safe firing angle.

Good to know

This is a short HTML5 jam demo rather than a full campaign; the page estimates a few minutes per session. It expects a keyboard and mouse, and no touch controls are listed. Optional support is offered through itch.io.
