Line Rider

Draw the hill, then let gravity grade your homework.

Line Rider turns a blank drawing surface into a tiny physics stage: sketch a route, press Play, and see whether the sledder glides, launches, or parts company with your plan. The current home screen keeps the invitation wonderfully terse with just Load Track and Play up front.

What is Line Rider?

Boštjan Čadež's 2006 interactive toy begins with an idea small enough to explain in one breath: a drawn line becomes terrain for a sledding character. That economy is the hook. A quick slope can produce an immediate ride, while a carefully shaped track becomes a piece of choreography assembled through drawing, playback, and revision. The fun sits in the gap between the route in your head and the motion the simulation actually produces. Independent accounts from the game's early years show how that compact setup grew into elaborate player-made constructions and videos. It still reads less like a level to beat than a pencil case with gravity tucked inside.

What you can do there

  • Draw a track for a sledder
  • Play or load a track and watch the ride

Why we picked it

Line Rider earns its place because the premise is instantly legible yet leaves real room for patience, craft, and happy accidents. The sledder turns every stroke into feedback, so even a failed landing can be more entertaining than a tidy success. Few browser toys make cause, effect, and doodling feel this closely related.

How to get the most from it

Start with one generous downhill line and press Play before attempting a masterpiece. Add curves in short passes, replay often, and treat each tumble as a clue about where the track needs a softer transition. Load Track is visible on the home surface when you already have something prepared.

Good to know

The current site presents the browser experience as free, and the project dates to 2006. Sound, touch support, saving, sharing, accounts, accessibility behavior, advertisements, and mobile parity are not documented clearly enough here to promise. Expect animated motion once playback begins.

Who made it, and when?
