Hilbert's Design

Knock on infinity's doors and meet the increasingly questionable tenants hiding behind the math.

Hilbert's Design turns the infinite-hotel thought experiment into a surreal door-checking routine. Each room promises another generated guest, face, or phrase while your search for a vacancy becomes the joke: in this hotel, there is always one more door and apparently no sensible concierge.

What is Hilbert's Design?

The mathematical setup is tidy; the hotel is not. Monninen and AinoFin take Hilbert's famous puzzle about countably infinite rooms and smear it through edited found media, synthetic face fragments, stray phrases, sound effects, and a Unity haze. The destination says the guests are randomly generated, while jam participants describe clicking through dozens of doors and meeting a parade of faces and oddities. That makes the search less a lesson with a neat answer than a procedural waiting room where infinity has hired an art-school prankster. The live build was not executed here, so its exact combinations, pacing, ending, and current controls remain unverified.

Why we picked it

A clean mathematical paradox becomes a grubby little encounter machine. That collision is the charm: the concept supplies an endless corridor, while the collage of mismatched guests keeps every knock just uncertain enough to invite another one.

How to get the most from it

Run the browser build and check doors for an empty room. Give it several knocks rather than stopping at the first guest; the recurring action and shifting faces are the structure. Headphones may add to the atmosphere, but start at a comfortable volume because the audio controls were not verified.

Good to know

This was a 2024 Brackeys jam entry credited to monninen and AinoFin and built in under two days. The page says its edited source material came from free-to-use images and sounds, with most faces assembled from This Person Does Not Exist. The full asset ledger, live controls, motion intensity, accessibility, privacy, and ending behavior remain unverified.

Who made it, and when?

monninen and AinoFin is the credited creator or organization. The earliest supported launch date we found is 2024.
