Envelope is an illustrated case study and open-source making project that pairs a Pixel 3a with a printable paper sleeve. Choose a call-focused or camera-focused constraint, seal the phone inside, and let the missing screen become the feature. The idea is memorable; the hardware support and linked app are decidedly archival.
What is Envelope?
Special Projects takes the usual screen-time setting and gives it glue seams. The project wraps a Google Pixel 3a in a printed paper interface, leaving only a narrow set of actions available through the touchscreen beneath it. One concept keeps calls and speed dial; another behaves like a screenless camera, storing the reveal for later. The case study is the strongest part of the visit now: it explains the physical interaction, shows the design process, links to a full-scale template, and opens the Android source for anyone inclined to adapt it. Because the sleeve has to be broken to recover the phone, the object turns a soft intention into a small, visible commitment. It is less a practical utility for current phones than a crisp demonstration of how subtraction can be an interface.
What you can do there
- Read the illustrated project case study
- Download and assemble the Pixel 3a paper template
- Inspect or adapt the open-source Android app
Why we picked it
Envelope makes digital restraint wonderfully literal. A sheet of paper does the work of a complicated settings menu, while the glowing controls beneath it preserve just enough smartphone magic to keep the concept from feeling punitive. The project also leaves useful design evidence behind: a printable pattern, open code, and a candidly destructive exit.
How to get the most from it
Start with the case study, then open the printable template to see how little material the idea needs. If you own a Pixel 3a and can source the app, print at full scale on the specified paper, cut and fold carefully, and remember that getting the full phone back means opening the sleeve. Developers can inspect the repository instead of treating the original hardware limit as permanent.
Good to know
The documented implementation supports the Google Pixel 3a, and the Google Play link exposed by the project page returned 404 during this check. The live app flow, camera behavior, calls, audio, accessibility, and modern Android compatibility were not tested. The destination also blocks third-party framing with SAMEORIGIN, so expect to open it directly.
