A Forest of Hearts

A tiny abstract love story that plants one very thorny question

A Forest of Hearts is a few-minute browser artgame about desire and the awkward limits of reciprocity. Vaida Plankytė wraps that tension in a minimalist, atmospheric Construct piece that offers a keyboard and very little explanation.

What is A Forest of Hearts?

The title promises emotional abundance, but the page opens with a much less comfortable problem: wanting affection without being able to give it back. A Forest of Hearts grew out of Vaida Plankytė's November 2014 One Game A Month practice. In a development note, she describes dropping a conventional side-scroller in favor of something stranger, more personal, and more meaningful; the finished page still wears that decision plainly. Its labels—abstract, atmospheric, experimental, minimalist, weird—read less like marketing categories than a compact trail map. There is a forest here, but no helpful wooden sign telling you where to stand.

What you can do there

  • Use keyboard input to explore an abstract piece about mismatched love

Why we picked it

This is a microgame with a question large enough to outgrow its runtime. Its spare presentation and personal origin make the lack of instructions feel intentional, while the title and premise pull in opposite directions in an interesting way.

How to get the most from it

Open the browser piece, use a keyboard, and give it a few uninterrupted minutes. Do not wait for a conventional objective screen; follow the abstract cues and let the central question do more of the guiding than the page copy does.

Good to know

The project is free, English-language, HTML5, and listed as a few minutes long. Exact controls, audio, motion, touch support, and accessibility behavior are undocumented. itch.io's current frame policy restricts third-party embedding, so open the destination directly.

Who made it, and when?
