World Imagery Wayback

World Imagery Wayback lets you inspect earlier published versions of Esri's global imagery basemap, compare local changes, and check the source and capture date behind a selected patch of earth. It is a map archive with a crucial fine-print distinction: release dates mark basemap versions, not necessarily when each local image was taken.

What is World Imagery Wayback?

Pick a place, narrow the list to versions with local changes, and move among dated releases of the World Imagery basemap. A selected location can reveal the imagery provider, capture date, and spatial resolution, while comparison and animation tools turn familiar ground into a modest cartographic time machine. The most useful discoveries are often practical rather than cinematic: an older layer may show a waterway more clearly, avoid a cloudy replacement, or preserve the map state used by an earlier project. Wayback is especially good at showing how Esri's published basemap evolved, but it should not be mistaken for a complete archive of every satellite pass.

Why we picked it

It makes an otherwise hidden editorial history of a global basemap browsable. The pleasure is half visual change hunt, half evidence check: a suburb spreads, a shoreline shifts, or a different image source explains why the ground suddenly looks unfamiliar.

How to get the most from it

Search for a place, turn on the local-changes filter, and choose two noticeably different release dates. Click the same feature in each version to compare providers and capture dates before drawing conclusions from the date printed beside the basemap release.

Good to know

Wayback's release date and a local image's capture date can be different, sometimes by years. Some tile-export, publishing, and web-map creation features require an ArcGIS Online organization sign-in, and imagery use remains subject to Esri's applicable terms.
