Viola the Bird turns mouse movement into the sound of a cello- or violin-like instrument, with a genial purple performer handling the bow. Follow arranged pieces in Concert mode or wander into Freestyle, where a short musical doodle can be recorded and shared.

What is Viola the Bird?

This is less a lesson than a remarkably low-friction invitation to make a string instrument sing. Move the pointer across the virtual instrument and Viola follows, translating position and gesture into notes through a machine-learning audio engine. Concert mode supplies familiar musical rails; Freestyle mode removes them and lets curiosity do the conducting. The bird character keeps the technology from feeling like a laboratory panel, while the short recording option gives a good squiggle somewhere to land.

Why we picked it
