The Pour-igin of Species

A bottle-label safari that asks whether the critter predicts the bargain.

The Pour-igin of Species turns nearly 1,500 animal-decorated wines into a playful hunt for value. Scroll through price and rating patterns, redefine what counts as a good deal, and compare sixteen creature groups from birds and bugs to bears and mythical beasts.

What is The Pour-igin of Species?

The premise begins as aisle psychology: if two unfamiliar bottles are staring back at you, should you trust the duck, the horse, or the suspiciously expensive griffin? The story answers with a layered set of scatterplots, filters, category cards, and rotatable bottle illustrations. It starts with broad medians, then lets you tighten the definition of value and inspect how each animal group differs by price, rating, wine type, and country. The graphics keep the statistics approachable without hiding that the sample is messy, model-assisted, and full of human judgment calls.

What you can do there

  • Compare label animals against wine price and rating
  • Adjust the definition of a good deal
  • Browse sixteen animal groups and individual bottles

Why we picked it

It finds a serious data question inside a wonderfully unserious shopping shortcut. The strongest part is the handoff from guided explanation to open exploration: once the main comparison clicks, the animal controls and bottle-level views invite you to test your own hunches.

How to get the most from it

Make the opening bottle choice before reading the prices, then follow the main scroll until the deal quadrants make sense. Adjust the price and rating cutoffs to match your own budget, and use the animal-group controls to compare broad patterns with individual bottles. Treat tiny categories as curiosities, not commandments.

Good to know

This is descriptive data journalism, not a tasting panel or a promise about the bottle in front of you. The sample comes from Vivino listings, label animals were identified with model assistance and human review, and prices and ratings can age. It discusses alcoholic beverages but does not sell them. The interactive charts and motion were not tested for keyboard or reduced-motion behavior.
