SYMBIOS

Petri-dish peacekeeping where a quiet colony can turn scrappy fast

SYMBIOS gives you a small microbial world and one plain mandate: keep its residents from fighting. The compact simulation rewards spatial planning and repeat attempts, though one of its tools, feeding healthy bacteria, remains more mysterious than instructive.

What is SYMBIOS?

A tiny arena, two temperamental populations, and just enough control to make their quarrels feel like your problem: SYMBIOS builds a miniature management puzzle from microbial diplomacy. Contemporary players found that dividing the map into separate corners could produce a perfect colony, while feeding healthy bacteria was harder to read. That uncertainty adds some laboratory tinkering, but it also means the system does not explain every lever cleanly. The simple graphics keep the population legible, and the music gives the little ecosystem more personality than a bare petri dish deserves. It is an old game-jam experiment with a neat, self-contained question: can you arrange a small world so everybody behaves?

What you can do there

  • Keep rival microbes apart
  • Arrange the colony spatially
  • Experiment with feeding healthy bacteria

Why we picked it

The scale and objective fit together beautifully. Instead of asking you to build an empire, SYMBIOS turns a handful of quarrelsome microbes into a complete strategy problem, with room for both a sensible plan and a little guesswork.

How to get the most from it

Begin by creating distance between the rival groups; opposite corners are a useful opening experiment. Watch what changes after each feeding action rather than spending every resource at once, and expect a second run to make more sense than the first.

Good to know

SYMBIOS is a free browser simulation made with Construct for Ludum Dare 38 in 2017. Music is part of the experience, but the purpose of feeding healthy bacteria was unclear to multiple contemporary players. The host's frame policy means it opens on itch.io rather than inside Site Stumble.
