Superbad

Superbad is a surviving piece of 1990s web art by Ben Benjamin: a network of visual jokes, graphic experiments, animations, and stray text connected by links that rarely explain where they lead. The current front door calls itself World's Largest GIF, which is exactly the sort of clue this place considers sufficient.

What is Superbad?

There is no dashboard, tour, or tidy hierarchy waiting to orient you. Superbad asks you to click the image, notice what changes, and keep following whatever looks faintly link-shaped. Some branches are loud and cartoonish; others resemble diagrams, typographic scraps, or half-remembered corporate interfaces. That uncertainty is not neglect but the medium of the piece. Created in 1997 and later included in the 2000 Whitney Biennial, it treats the browser as a room full of trapdoors rather than a delivery system for content. A short visit yields a quick jolt of visual mischief. A longer one becomes archaeology conducted with the Back button.

Why we picked it

Superbad still feels mischievously specific decades after its debut. Its links reward curiosity without promising utility, and its stubbornly nonlinear structure preserves a version of the web that was willing to be a place rather than a product funnel.
