Smitten Kitchen

A recipe archive where weeknight pasta and birthday cake get the same sharp-eyed treatment.

Smitten Kitchen is Deb Perelman’s long-running home-cooking blog, built around full recipes, opinionated headnotes, and an archive that can be searched or filtered by ingredient and dietary need. It makes room for quick salads and pantry pasta, but also for the sort of from-scratch project that needs a Saturday afternoon.

What is Smitten Kitchen?

Smitten Kitchen has the useful chaos of someone’s favorite recipe notebook, except the notebook has a search bar, a comment section, and years of cross-referenced dinners. The current front page moves from cucumber salad to spaghetti aglio e olio, lemonade, and a hot-dog supper with vinegared iceberg. Tags such as Budget, Quick, Vegetarian, Dairy-Free, and 5 Ingredients or Fewer make the archive less of a haunted pantry and more of a place to start cooking. Deb Perelman founded the site in 2006, and its own guide describes a kitchen philosophy that favors approachable ingredients over fussy shopping lists. The archive supports browsing by ingredient or dietary need, and the Surprise Me link is available when deciding is the hardest part of dinner. An independent profile reports that the project has grown past a thousand recipes while Perelman remains closely involved in recipe development and photography. Expect a story with your instructions; that voice is part of the meal.

What you can do there

  • Browse recent recipes
  • Search the archive
  • Filter by ingredient or dietary need
  • Read recipe notes and comments
  • Use Surprise Me for a random recipe

Why we picked it

The site gives ordinary cooking enough dignity to be interesting without pretending every Tuesday dinner needs a grand entrance. Recent posts, detailed tags, searchable recipes, and the random-recipe detour make it unusually easy to arrive with one ingredient, one mood, or no plan at all.

How to get the most from it

Use search when you know an ingredient or dish, then lean on tags such as Quick, Budget, or Vegetarian to narrow the field. If you are browsing, try Surprise Me. Read the complete recipe and notes before shopping, and treat comments as practical context rather than a replacement for allergy checks.

Good to know

Recipes range from fast, low-ingredient meals to baking and from-scratch projects, so read the full ingredient list, timing, and equipment notes first. This pass did not cook a recipe or test substitutions, dietary filters, comments, affiliate links, or mobile behavior.
