Signals From Somewhere turns audio effects into a listening puzzle: compare a mystery transmission with your own, adjust mouse-driven dials, and hunt for the moment both signals line up. It is a compact Ludum Dare prototype with a wonderfully strange radio-desk premise and a difficulty curve that gets fuzzy fast.

What is Signals From Somewhere?

Each stage pairs a reference transmission with a version you can alter. The knobs change selected audio properties, and the puzzle clears when your settings drift close enough to the hidden target. Rather than hand you a spectrum display, the game asks you to listen, compare, and nudge. That makes a solved frequency feel less like entering a code and more like coaxing a distant broadcast out of static. Later signals introduce more complicated combinations and intermittent sounds, so clean ear work gradually gives way to patient experimentation.

What you can do there

  • Compare a mystery signal with an adjustable signal
  • Tune mouse-driven dials until the frequencies match

Why we picked it

Most dial puzzles are secretly number puzzles wearing a control panel. This one makes the sound itself the evidence. The result is tactile, slightly eerie, and unusually committed to listening as the whole mechanic. Its Ludum Dare ratings back up that distinction: the entry placed far better for innovation and theme than for overall polish.

How to get the most from it

Put on headphones, start with one knob, and make small changes while listening for exactly what shifts. Resist the urge to sweep every control at once; on the harder signals, learning what each dial changes is half the puzzle. Expect some trial and error when a reference sound contains long quiet gaps.

Good to know

Audio is essential, and the official page recommends headphones. The project is marked as a prototype, supports HTML5 and Windows, and uses mouse-only controls. Several jam players found the later matches difficult or short on feedback, and one reported intermittent freezing without an identified cause. No live compatibility or accessibility testing was performed for this draft.
