Machina Vitae

A cellular automaton with enough knobs to turn tiny neighbor rules into an unruly living display.

Machina Vitae is a compact cellular-automata toy for shaping a field of restless cells. Change the birth and survival rules, seed density, random disruptions, colors, timing, and visual decay, then draw directly on the grid and see what survives. There is no score to chase; the pleasure is in nudging the machine and watching order negotiate with static.

What is Machina Vitae?

The grid begins as a visual system rather than a puzzle with one correct answer. Its control tray lets you alter which neighbor counts create or preserve a cell, how quickly generations advance, and how often a random cell flips. A second layer changes the performance: square or round points, foreground and background colors, cell size, plus separate fade and shrink timing. You can also draw into the field with a pointer, so a calm pattern can become a small weather event with one swipe. The controls are terse and mostly unlabeled, which makes the first visit feel like examining a curious instrument rather than following a lesson.

What you can do there

  • Adjust simulation rules and visual parameters
  • Draw or erase cells with a pointer
  • Watch patterns evolve

Why we picked it

A handful of small rules can produce a surprisingly personal screenful of motion, and Machina Vitae exposes both the mathematics and the stage lighting. The same grid can become orderly, fizzy, sparse, or gloriously overgrown without asking for an account or a long tutorial.

How to get the most from it

Begin with the speed and starting-density sliders, then change one neighbor-rule checkbox at a time so you can see what each adjustment does. Try drawing a short line into the grid, and use the color and size controls only after the pattern has developed a recognizable rhythm.

Good to know

WebGL2 is required, and the experience revolves around continuous motion. Control changes may make a brief synthesized click. The creator points to a separate Githack version for fullscreen wake-lock behavior and shareable configuration URLs that the itch.io wrapper cannot reliably provide. The compact, symbol-heavy controls may be awkward with assistive technology.
