Houston Dream Realms turns four small city parks into eight browser-based dreamscapes. The premise is wonderfully specific: roam each surreal interpretation, locate its portals, and let an ordinary patch of Houston slip into something less obedient.
What is Houston Dream Realms?
This is a walking artwork with fieldwork tucked under its floorboards. Zachary Schulte visited and documented four of Houston's smallest parks, then used each place as the blueprint for two digital environments. The result links physical observation to deliberately unreal space: a park becomes a memory, the memory becomes a Unity scene, and a portal carries the idea somewhere else. Its companion Park Pause notes also make the method portable, inviting anyone to look closely at a public park and answer it with a creative act.
What you can do there
- Search park-derived dreamscapes for portals
- Move through linked digital environments
Why we picked it
The project gives the familiar walking-simulator format a local reason to exist. Each environment begins with a real civic patch of ground, so the surrealism has an anchor rather than floating off as random spectacle. It is a compact example of net art making geography pleasantly unreliable.
How to get the most from it
Launch the dreamscape from the itch.io page, then follow the creator's plain instruction: look for portals and walk into them. Give each environment a moment before moving on; the interesting comparison is between the park-derived spaces, not a race toward an ending.
Good to know
The page labels the Unity-based HTML5 work as free and still in development. Live controls, audio, motion, performance, completion cues, reset behavior, mobile support, and accessibility were not verified, and no screenshot was captured in the approved environment. The stored frame policy limits embedding to itch.io, so Site Stumble should treat it as directory-only.
