Fun Google Map Tile

A tiled Earth leaves the flat map behind and turns zoom levels, sunlight, and camera height into a 3D playground.

Fun-GoogleMapTile is a hands-on Three.js mapping experiment rather than a route planner. It wraps dynamically loaded map tiles around a navigable globe, then layers in location controls, scale and distance readouts, sun-driven day and night, and a real-time moon position.

What is Fun Google Map Tile?

This is the sort of demo that makes ordinary map machinery visible. Pan and zoom, choose a location, change tile settings, and watch the example calculate which pieces of the map belong on screen. Alongside the globe are readouts for position, scale, and the camera's distance from the ground; sun and moon positions give the scene a time-of-day dimension. The rough edges are part of the appeal: it is a learning project exposing the geometry, coordinates, UVs, transitions, and caching behind the trick, not a disguised commercial map.

What you can do there

  • Pan and zoom around a tile-built globe
  • Choose a location and adjust the map center
  • Inspect live scale, position, and camera-to-ground measurements

Why we picked it

The familiar act of moving around a map becomes a compact lesson in how tiled geography is assembled. Its globe, lighting, measurements, and visible loading behavior turn an everyday interface into something inspectable and slightly strange, with enough controls to reward a few exploratory minutes.

How to get the most from it

Begin at a broad view, set a destination, and use the orbit controls to change center and zoom. Keep an eye on the scale and camera-to-ground readouts while moving closer, then compare daylight across different positions. Treat geolocation as optional if the browser offers it.

Good to know

This is an evolving technical demo, and tile loading can become conspicuous: independent feedback noted slow country appearance at broad views, while the creator says close zooms can demand many tiles. Current mobile controls, accessibility, geolocation privacy, and map-data attribution were not confirmed.
