Calm & Satisfying

Epitacle

Paint fire, walls, and creeping life into a pocket cellular storm.

Epitacle is a tiny cellular-automaton sandbox with three brushes and no prescribed finish line. Seed creep, add fire, draw walls, and watch deterministic rules plus a little randomness turn simple marks into restless organic patterns.

What is Epitacle?

The controls fit on a sticky note, but the canvas refuses to sit still. Hold the left mouse button to paint with the active brush, use the right button to cycle through creep, fire, and wall, then watch each material negotiate with its neighbors. Epitacle began as a roughly twelve-hour prototype and later moved its cell calculations into shaders, allowing a much denser and faster grid. That technical change serves the toy's real pleasure: enough tiny cells can make a few casual strokes bloom, burn, break apart, or settle into something that looks uncannily alive.

What you can do there

  • Paint creep, fire, and walls into a running cellular simulation
  • Watch deterministic rules and small random changes form evolving patterns

Why we picked it

Epitacle turns drawing into a conversation with rules. You provide the provocation; the grid handles the consequences. It is especially satisfying when a tidy line becomes a messy little ecosystem before you have decided what it was meant to be.

How to get the most from it

Hold the left mouse button to paint. Tap the right mouse button to rotate through creep, fire, and wall, then layer the materials and let the simulation run. Start with small separated patches so you can see which changes belong to each brush before filling the whole field.

Good to know

This is a goal-free simulation rather than a scored game, and the page labels a typical visit as only a few seconds. It is free with optional support and includes a 3.4 MB download. The creators mark it textless and color-blind friendly, though motion and keyboard-only support are not documented. One player found the destructible wall behavior confusing, a concern the creator acknowledged.
