Cocooning For The Winter is a compact browser game about a hungry worm whose diet rewrites its body. Move through the terrain, eat unlikely chunks of the world, talk to the creatures you uncover, and chase a collection of bug forms at your own curious pace.
What is Cocooning for the Winter?
The joke here doubles as the rulebook: if it looks edible, the worm can probably make a meal of it. Different bites push the creature toward different metamorphoses, while conversations with discovered bugs offer nudges toward more possibilities and a collection screen supplies a loose long-term goal. That makes wandering useful even when you are not sure what to do next. The project began as a 48-hour Mutation-themed jam entry, then received a browser build and clearer talk prompts a month later. Its combination of digging, grazing, and creature collecting earned fourth place overall in the jam, with second-place finishes for both innovation and mood.
What you can do there
- Move through and dig across the terrain
- Eat parts of the environment to change creature form
- Talk to bugs and work toward the creature collection
Why we picked it
A wonderfully literal mutation mechanic turns ordinary exploration into an experiment: every snack is also a design decision. The game is small enough to approach casually, but its hints and collection goal give the odd little ecosystem more structure than a one-joke jam toy.
How to get the most from it
Move with WASD or a control stick, eat with Space or the X button, and talk with E or the A button. Speak to newly found bugs for clues, vary what you eat, and use the collection as a menu of mysteries rather than a checklist you must rush.
Good to know
The current page offers a Unity WebGL build plus Windows and macOS downloads. Music can be muted with M or Select, and the menu uses a mouse. Its framing policy allows itch.io rather than Site Stumble, so open the game page directly. Touch support, saving, performance, and detailed accessibility behavior remain unverified.
